Soft Geotextile Weights Control Pipeline Buoyancy
THE WEIGHT
Allan Edwards’ wrap-around Soft Pipeline Weights are manufactured from a non-woven geotextile. This non-woven geotextile was selected for its excellent hydraulic properties, its proven strength of the material, and its long-term durability underground.
Of the polymers used to manufacture geotextiles, polypropylene exhibits the greatest resistance to chemical attack. It is the polymer of choice for such commonly-used products as landfill liners, artificial turf for athletic fields, outdoor carpeting, battery cases, bleach bottles, antifreeze jugs, washing machine agitators, and thousands of items
that are routinely exposed to chemical environments. Polypropylene is stable within a pH range of 2 to 13, making it one of the
most stable polymers.
Polypropylene geotextiles have been proven to be durable in a wide range of chemical environments. Research has found both woven and non-woven polypropylene geotextiles to be non-biodegradable and resistant to commonly encountered soil-bound chemicals, landfill achates, mildew, and insects.
Allan Edwards’ Soft Pipeline Weights are readily available from stock in sizes 4" and larger.
LIFTING
Lifting and fastening the weight to the pipe is accomplished with web slings, lifting in the “basket” mode. Sling material is a woven polyester, chosen for zero stretch, UV and abrasion resistance, and excellent resistance to rot and mildew. The sling design is tested to a minimum of 5 times the weight being lifted. The sling is thus a rated lifting device—the only one being used on soft style weights today.
FILL MATERIAL
Fill material is 1/2" minus aggregate. This aggregate gives our weights distinct advantage: The fill will not freeze into a solid mass making it easy to install in all weather conditions. The immersed weight of the aggregate is superior to both concrete or sand, so fewer weights are required on the line.
REMOTE OPERATIONS
The filling of the weights can be done at remote locations. If you have a large project and want to save on transportation charges, contact us about custom filling at a site near the right-of-way. If you elect to utilize your own crews, we can train as required. Once you choose Allan Edwards for your weight requirements, we’ll make your job as easy and as profitable as possible.
